Freelancers

Registering for Self-Employment

  1. Talk to a reputable accountant to check that your type of freelancing qualifies you for self employment.
  2. With the help of an accountant decide whether your status will be sole trader or limited company.
  3. If you choose sole trader go to www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed.
  4. If you choose to form your own limited company, or more likely purchase one off the shelf, visit www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed.
  5. For recommended umbrella and composite limited companies, and all types of advice for contractors, go to the Professional Contractors Group at www.pcg.org.uk.
  6. You may need to register for VAT. Try www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/index.htm.
  7. Set up a good record keeping system and BE ORGANISED.

Freelancing - getting paid

Freelancing with Media Recruitment means you will probably be paid directly, generally by the company you are working with and on a monthly basis; and on presentation of a timesheet (you can download one from our website – see Contact Us page), which must be signed by the client to confirm your hours. PAYE freelancers will receive net pay with tax and NI deducted, and we will keep a record of your paid holiday entitlement which you can check with us at any time (we will require your P45 at the start of the contracted period, together with your bank details).
